ABAP boxers, MPIC join MVP for relief drive

Over 5,000 packs of relief goods distributed
Amateur boxers and their coaches, as well as local officials have joined companies chaired by businessman and sports patron Manuel V. Pangilinan in their relief drive at evacuation centers, as the Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) made a P1-million donation for flood victims.
Our boxers and coaches are spent but fulfilled,• Ed Picson, executive director of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP), said. •They themselves did the repacking and distribution of relief goods.• He added that local executives, such as Bacoor Mayor Strike Revilla, joined the relief drive for their respective constituents.
These relief efforts and the MPIC monetary donation for the victims of typhoon •Maring,• which intensified the southwest monsoon from last Sunday until Wednesday, were part of •Tulong Kapatid,• a campaign launched by Mr. Pangilinan, more known for his initials, MVP, in Dec. 2012 to help the needy in times of disaster.
Housed at the Meralco Compound, along Ortigas Ave., the MVP Tulong Kapatid Center has become the drop-off and repacking point for goods donated by executives, employees, friends, and supporters of the MVP-managed companies, including ABAP and MPIC, which is the Philippine-based investment unit of the parent company, First Pacific Co. Ltd., in Hong Kong.
Mr. Pangilinan himself has led representatives from his different companies in distributing more than 5,000 packs of relief goods to the evacuation centers across Metro Manila, Cavite, Bataan, and Pampanga from Tuesday, bringing the group to Mandaluyong, Taguig, Bacoor, Dinalupihan, and San Fernando, among other areas affected by the monsoon rains and •Maring.•
On Saturday, Gilas Pilipinas, the country•s national basketball team sponsored by MVP group•s Smart Communications and the national sport association for basketball called Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, and TV5 contract artists joined Mr. Pangilinan in a relief drive in Bataan•s Dinalupihan, hometown of the high-scoring hoop star Gary •El Granada• David.
Last Tuesday, Philex Mining Corp. SVP Michael Toledo, who is also head of the MVP Group of Companies• Media Bureau, said the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF) and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), both headed by Mr. Pangilinan, donated a combined amount of P1 million for the flood victims.
While Meralco, or Manila Electric Co., provided the headquarters for the MVP Tulong Kapatid Center, the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) has been helping in the transportation of relief goods. Also an MVP company, NLEX is formerly the North Diversion Road and Manila North Expressway.
The MVP Tulong Kapatid has also tapped its search-and-rescue teams from Philex Mining and its medical staff from the MPIC Hospitals Group to lend a hand in the campaign, which last year announced a holistic approach to giving assistance during calamities.
As such, Tulong Kapatid has not only distributed relief goods and provided rescue and medical aid in calamity-hit areas, but likewise set up soup kitchens, built shelter for the homeless, reconstructed damaged infrastructure, and created livelihood for those who had lost their jobs because of natural disasters.
