Following ‘most promising’ firm award on same category from a reg’l journal

Philex Mining Corp. has been adjudged by a prestigious award-giving body as the best company by the way it is managed through its system of rules, practices, and processes, and was feted along with the other winners in various categories at formal ceremonies held recently.  

It clinched the •€œSecurity Bank Corporate Governance Company of the Year•€ award granted by the Asia CEO Awards, receiving the accolade at the awarding night of Nov. 12 held at the Solaire Resort and Casino, in Parañaque.  

This triumph comes on the heels of winning a regional award•€”the •€œMost Promising Companies on Corporate Governance•€•€”granted by the Corporate Governance Asia, the region•€™s most authoritative journal on corporate governance, at formal ceremonies held Oct. 24 in Hong Kong.  

€œThis is another recognition of our efforts to continue adhering to good governance and responsible mining,•€ Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman of Philex Mining, said. •€œI am happy that the number of organizations recognizing that good governance is in our DNA has grown.•€  

The company•€™s CFO and chief corporate-governance officer, Danny Yu, said, •€œWe are grateful for these awards, which are a result of our painstaking efforts to continuously be a better organization and responsible mining company. We thank our management and employees, as well as all our stakeholders for their avid support.•€  

With this year•€™s theme, •€œEmerging Asia,•€ the Asia CEO plans to extend the awards to other Southeast Asian countries by next year, in line with the economic integration of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).  

€œIn 2015, we are opening the nominations to the ASEAN [members] because of this integration,•€ Rebecca Bustamante, CEO and president of Asia CEO, said. •€œWe are working as one now. We Filipinos deserve this [recognition]. We deserve to show the world that we are world-class.•€  

Richard Mills, chairman of Asia CEO, was quoted by media reports as saying, •€œThe winners are fantastic organizations doing great work and great contributions to the country.•€  

The Asia CEO Awards said it represents the biggest alliance of local and international businesspeople ever created to promote the Philippines.  

Shopping-mall magnate Henry Sy, Sr. was this year•€™s top awardee by winning the •€œCEO Lifetime Contributor of the Year•€ award, while Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr. bagged the same distinction in the public-sector category. The secretary was noted for his efforts in gaining growth for the country•€™s tourism industry through its campaigns here and abroad.  

Michael McCullough, managing director of KMC MAG Group Philippines, won the •€œSPi Global Young Leader of the Year•€ award, while First Metro Investment Corp. President Roberto Dispo was granted the •€œSmart Enterprise Global Filipino Executive of the Year•€ award.  

Palawan•€™s El Nido Resorts, on the other hand, took home the •€œPhilippine Airlines Hospitality Destination of the Year•€ award.  

These companies also won: Envirosite Corp.•€”ORACLE Technology Company of the Year; PJ Lhuillier (Capital One CSR Company of the Year); San Carlos Solar Energy (First Carbon Solutions Green Company of the Year); Generika, Inc. (SURE Solutions Best Innovative Company of the Year), for its Medpadala electronic gift checks; Fluor Daniel Management Systems (NEC Quality Company of the Year); Lars Witting of Regus Philippines (Jones Lang La Salle Expatriate Executive of the Year); Smart Communications (Meralco Top Employer of the Year); and SM Prime Holdings (KPMG Executive Leadership Team).  

The following companies presented the awards: SPi Global, Smart Communications, SHORE Solutions, Security Bank, PLDT Alpha Enterprise, Philippine Airlines, Oracle, NEC, Meralco, KPMG, Jones Lang LaSalle, FirstCarbon Solutions, and Capital One, among other organizations.
